Fast-Tracked Execution to Unlock Capacity and Reliability

At Pembina’s Resthaven site in Alberta, Lauren partnered with Pembina Pipeline Corporation to rescue and deliver a complex gas plant expansion that had fallen significantly behind schedule. The grassroots and brownfield expansion of an existing 100 MMSCFD sweet gas plant aimed to increase capacity to 300 MMSCFD through the addition of deep cut / turbo expander cold train processing. When early project challenges and an 18-month schedule delay threatened delivery, Pembina turned to Lauren to take over engineering execution and get the project back on track.

Accelerating Capacity Through Disciplined, Collaborative Execution

Lauren assumed responsibility for advancing Phase 1 of the expansion using a fast-track methodology and a ‘one-team’ delivery approach. Within four months of engagement, detailed design deliverables were underway, enabling construction activities to proceed in parallel with engineering. Phase 1 successfully increased plant capacity to 200 MMSCFD while establishing the technical and execution foundation for Phase 2, ultimately bringing total capacity to 300 MMSCFD. Despite the compressed timeline, detailed design was completed within 18 months, restoring confidence and momentum to the project.

Navigating Complexity Under Schedule Pressure

The Resthaven expansion demanded disciplined execution across a wide range of technical and logistical challenges, including tight timelines, integration with existing facilities, and coordination across multiple disciplines. Lauren delivered comprehensive detailed design and drafting to produce IFC construction packages for site grading, piling, foundations, modular pipe racks, piping, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems. The team also supported procurement through equipment specifications, tender reviews, and recommendations, while providing construction support for RFIs, commissioning assistance, and start-up support.

The plant was commissioned and producing on-spec gas and liquids just three weeks after feed-in. While the original on-stream target was Q2 2014, the facility came online in Q3 2014, a testament to the effectiveness of the fast-track execution model under Pembina-managed construction.
