High-HP Pumps for Oil Throughput Gains

In Alberta, Lauren partnered with Pembina Pipeline Corporation to lead the Pump Station Program, a transformative series of greenfield and brownfield expansions that amplified NGL, heavy oil, and crude transport capacities across dispersed energy corridors, enabling market-leading throughput for diverse products like condensate, light/sour crude, and LVP/HVP streams. From 2010 to 2017, our team orchestrated EPCM services for over 30 pump stations and 90+ multistage centrifugal pumps exceeding 100,000 HP total, managing concurrent designs, fast-track executions, and advanced control integrations to deliver capacities up to 250,000 BPD while navigating geographic challenges, regulatory demands, and aggressive timelines for seamless operational uplift.

Amplifying throughput with strategic multistage pump integrations

This comprehensive program fortified Pembina’s infrastructure through targeted expansions, including the Northern NGL & Peace NGL Phase 1 adding 13 stations with 22 multistage pumps at 29,000 HP (fast-tracked Northern stations online in 10 months, full Peace rollout in 22); Heavy Oil Pipeline introducing five new stations and 14 pumps at 30,000 HP for 100,000 BOPD flows; Nipisi Heavy Crude building five stations from Nipisi to Edmonton with 12 pumps (1,250-3,000 HP) and NPS 16-24 piping, plus collaborative control designs for startup/normal ops; Peace Phase II upgrading the 20” LVP system to 250,000 BPD via three new stations (two brownfield initiators with integrity metering, one greenfield booster) installing ~23,000 HP; Swan Hills reconfiguring four brownfield stations for LVP crude at 54,000 BPD with 8,100 HP rebuilt API 610 BB3 pumps and Schneider Quantum PLC/Citect HMI upgrades; Crude NGL Upgrades Phase II encompassing 19 green/brownfield projects ($300M TIC) adding 32 pumps at 55,500 HP to boost HVP/LVP capacities by 108,000 BPD total; and Mitsue/Nipisi enhancements for 22,000-108,000 BPD interim/ultimate rates. Additional sites like Utikuma, Judy Creek, Camp Creek, and others rounded out a robust network of optimized facilities.

Coordinating dispersed executions amid aggressive schedules

The Pump Station Program grappled with the rigors of multi-site concurrency across Alberta’s varied terrains, from fast-track imperatives and brownfield reconfigurations to hydraulic complexities and legacy control modernizations, which Lauren surmounted through integrated EPCM prowess and adaptive strategies. Balancing 10-22 month timelines for high-HP installations required meticulous feasibility studies, site assessments, and hydraulic modeling to pre-empt flow bottlenecks, while upgrading antiquated PLC/SCADA systems and ensuring API-compliant integrations minimized disruptions. Our multidisciplinary coordination spanned procurement for specialized pumps, construction oversight in remote locales, and commissioning for immediate on-stream reliability, while fostering stakeholder alignment and project controls to deliver under budget, elevating system performance without compromising safety or environmental standards.

What we delivered

Completed between 2010 and 2017 across Alberta, this program exemplifies Lauren’s leadership in scaling midstream infrastructure for enhanced energy transport efficiency.

Infrastructure: Over 30 greenfield/brownfield pump stations with 90+ multistage centrifugal API 610 BB3 pumps (up to 55,500 HP per phase), NPS 16-24 piping, integrity metering, tube/tank storage additions, and advanced controls for capacities from 22,000 to 250,000 BPD across NGL, heavy oil, and crude systems.

End-to-End Management: EPCM from feasibility studies and site assessments through multidisciplinary engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning, including as-builts and hydraulic optimizations for phased rollouts.
