Accelerated Delivery Under Compressed Timelines
Adaptive Design for Schedule, Safety, and Value
Lauren delivered detailed engineering for the Phase 7 Smoky Area Pipeline Project, part of Pembina Pipeline’s Peace System expansion in northwest Alberta. The project involved approximately 250 kilometres of 508 mm OD multi-product pipeline transporting LVP crude, LVP condensate, and HVP C2+.
The project required accelerated execution to meet tightly constrained winter and summer construction windows. Following a pause during the COVID-19 period, the project was reactivated under compressed timelines. Lauren worked closely with Pembina’s project, construction, environmental, and lands teams to re-establish momentum and complete all engineering deliverables on schedule.
Value Engineering at IFC
As the project approached IFC, a key design decision was made to revise valve site spacing from an LVP/HVP/Crude configuration to an LVP/Crude-only design. Lauren coordinated detailed outflow spill modeling with specialty subcontractors to validate the revised approach and optimize valve spacing for the LVP pipeline.
This redesign reduced the number of installed valve sites from 20 to 8, delivering significant capital cost savings while maintaining regulatory compliance and safety performance. The work reflects Lauren’s ability to apply practical engineering judgment under pressure while protecting project outcomes.
