Boosting Crude Storage and Blending Capacity

In Hardisty, Alberta, Lauren partnered with Gibson Energy to spearhead the East Terminal Expansion, a multi-phase greenfield initiative that bolstered crude oil terminalling capabilities within a vital transportation nexus, serving stream and merchant customers with enhanced truck operations, blending, and storage. Overseeing engineering, procurement, and construction management across expansive tank additions and infrastructure upgrades from Pre-FEED through detailed execution, our team integrated large-scale storage tanks, high-capacity pumps, and sophisticated piping systems to accommodate growing volumes, ensuring seamless connectivity, operational efficiency, and compliance in a high-stakes energy corridor.

Scaling terminalling services with advanced storage and transfer infrastructure

This landmark program transformed the Hardisty East Terminal, boasting 4.3 million barrels of connected storage, through successive expansions that added critical assets for receiving, blending, and dispatching crude oil. Lauren delivered comprehensive engineering for four 300,000 BBL crude storage tanks, including 610-1066 OD piping infrastructure, three 1800 m³/hr transfer pumps, custody transfer metering, C4 & C5 online blending, and QC equipment. Subsequent phases incorporated three 400,000 BBL IFR tanks and one 500,000 BBL IFR tank with inlet/outlet valve manifold matrices, 1220 OD tank suction lines, and six 600 HP vertical can transfer pumps at 2165 m³/hr each; further additions included three 400,000 BBL IFR, one 300,000 BBL IFR, and one 500,000 BBL IFR API 650 steel tanks, plus a 300,000 BBL tank, 500,000 BBL IFR tank, and three 500 HP Flowserve vertical can pumps at 1250 m³/hr. These enhancements, encompassing fire suppression systems and large bore piping, elevated the terminal’s capacity for diverse crude handling in a fully integrated hub.

Mastering phased greenfield expansions amid operational demands

The Hardisty East Terminal Expansion navigated the intricacies of large-scale greenfield development integrated with an active facility, where Lauren’s multidisciplinary approach ensured precision amid evolving scopes and logistical challenges in a remote, high-volume crude hub. Coordinating procurement for specialized equipment like internal floating roof tanks and high-horsepower pumps required rigorous cost estimating and vendor alignment to avoid disruptions, while detailed design phases addressed manifold complexities and blending integrations under tight timelines. Through proactive construction management and FEED optimizations, our team mitigated risks from phased implementations, delivering robust infrastructure that maintained terminal uptime, adhered to API standards, and supported seamless scalability without compromising safety or efficiency.
