Boosting Westcoast Transmission Capacity Through Integrated Expansions
T-South Loops and Compression Upgrades
In GTM Mainland, British Columbia, Lauren partnered with Enbridge to drive the Sunrise Expansion Program (SEP), a pivotal brownfield initiative augmenting the Westcoast Energy Transmission South (T-South) system’s capacity via 185 km of NPS 42 pipeline loops, greenfield compressor additions, and targeted station upgrades to meet surging regional gas demands. As detailed design engineering contractor since 2022, our team orchestrated multidisciplinary upgrades across 13 locations from CS-2 to CS-9 and MS-16, converting in-series to parallel compressor operations, integrating large-bore infrastructure, and collaborating on compressor performance curves to ensure seamless scalability, regulatory alignment, and minimal operational interruptions in a high-throughput corridor.
Elevating T-South throughput with hybrid greenfield and brownfield enhancements
The SEP fortifies the GTM line through strategic pipeline loops and compression expansions, incorporating five greenfield compressor unit additions at CS-2B, CS-3, CS-6B, and CS-8A (totaling 40,000 HP) plus a new 17,000 HP midpoint station between CS-8B and CS-9. Lauren’s brownfield focus targeted seven compressor stations (CS-3, CS-4A, CS-4B, CS-5, CS-6A, CS-7, CS-9) and MS-16, redesigning for parallel operations with new pipeline barrels, up to 42-inch large-bore piping and valves, air coolers, scrubbers, vent stacks, and silencers to support revised process conditions. Our partnership extended to vendor collaborations for establishing SEP-specific compressor wheel curves, delivering optimized hydraulics and equipment integrations for enhanced efficiency and reliability.
Navigating operational conversions and equipment integrations for flawless scalability
The Sunrise Expansion Program required intricate brownfield retrofits in live facilities, where Lauren excelled by addressing the complexities of shifting compressor philosophies and accommodating oversized additions amid constrained spaces and process revisions. Coordinating across multiple stations demanded precise multidisciplinary alignments to mitigate risks from large-bore installations and auxiliary equipment, while proactive communications and project management ensured stakeholder buy-in and vendor synergies for curve validations. Through rigorous design reviews and constructability assessments, our team minimized downtime, aligned with Enbridge’s expansion goals, and upheld stringent safety and environmental protocols in dynamic GTM terrains.
