Modernizing Rural Distribution for Long-Term Performance
Upgrading Legacy Infrastructure to Meet Today’s Demands
In rural British Columbia, Lauren supported FortisBC with the reconductoring and modernization of a three-phase 13 kV overhead distribution line. The project addressed aging infrastructure, capacity constraints, and non-compliance with current utility standards, ensuring improved reliability and future readiness.
Increasing capacity while maintaining safety and compliance
Lauren redesigned the alignment using larger #2 ACSR conductors, upgraded pole classes, and replaced substandard equipment including transformers, cutouts, and framing assemblies. Fuse coordination was incorporated to enhance sectionalizing and system reliability, while polymer cutouts were installed to improve protection on previously unfused taps.
Resolving complex field, right-of-way, and joint-use challenges
PLSCADD modeling identified overstressed structures and clearance violations, which were resolved through revised framing and pole upgrades. Portions of the alignment encroached on private property, requiring statutory right-of-way coordination with landowners. The presence of TELUS joint-use attachments added further complexity, addressed through early stakeholder engagement and coordinated field verification.
