Hands On: Providing next gen engineers with practical experience

To call a co-op position a life-changing experience may sound dramatic, but for Austin Bercier his time with Lauren as a fourth year University of Calgary student was foundational. “The experience was incredible and unlike anything I had done before,” says Austin.

“It’s always been very important to me that we support the next generation of engineers in Canada by providing the opportunity to get as close to the work as possible,” says Rod Phipps, a Lauren founder and current managing partner. “Austin is a fantastic ambassador of the power of co-op programs. We’re glad he stayed with us to grow in his profession.”

Lauren formalized placement and co-op program was designed to support and mentor Indigenous students and new graduates every year. Now entering his third year as an EIT with Lauren’s Calgary team, Austin looks back on the amazing opportunity and why placements are so important for up-and-coming engineers.  

Q: When did you start with Lauren through the co-op program?

I started with Lauren through the co-op program in May 2021. I completed a 16-month co-op, went back to school for a year, and then returned to Lauren in May 2023. I've been back ever since.

Q: How did you hear about the co-op program?

It was actually through Rod Phipps (managing partner), who reached out to the Indigenous Career Specialist at the University of Calgary. I had previously shared my resume with her for review and critique. She later contacted me to ask if she could pass my resume on to Lauren for an interview. I had an interview with Rod and Darren Jones, and they set up a 16-month co-op for me. That was my introduction to Lauren.

Q: Where did you go to school, and what did you specialize in?

I attended the University of Calgary and completed the dual degree program. I earned a degree in mechanical engineering and a business degree with a concentration in operations management. The business degree added an extra year to my studies, but it was worth it for the people skills and confidence it gave me.

Q: What made you decide to stay with Lauren after your co-op?

Near the end of my co-op, I had the opportunity to work on a field project in northern BC, specifically in Terrace. It was a remote integrity project involving helicopter and jet boat access. The experience was incredible and unlike anything I had done before. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that solidified my decision to return to Lauren.

Q: How has your role evolved since returning to Lauren full-time?

At Lauren, your growth is really supported. I've been given more responsibilities every step of the way. I started by assisting with various projects and have since been assigned as the project engineer on several projects. I'm the main point of contact with clients and delegate tasks to different disciplines. Additionally, I've been working with Charbel Rouhana, Director of Engineering, on strategy, leveraging my business degree to add value to Lauren.

Q: What are your future plans with Lauren?

I plan to obtain my Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation, which I'm about 18 months away from being able to submit. I definitely see myself continuing to grow and take on more responsibilities at Lauren. 

Q: Have you been involved in promoting the co-op program or mentoring other students?

I started a club at the University of Calgary and still keep in touch with some of my former peers. I refer them to Lauren for internships and new grad opportunities whenever I can. I believe in the value of the co-op program and want to help other students benefit from it.

Q: What's next for you outside of work?

I'm getting married soon, so it's an exciting time. I'm really looking forward to the next chapter of my life, both personally and professionally.
